How Streem became the essential tool for government media teams

By Streem

October 18, 2021

A stint working in the prime minister’s office gave Streem CEO Elgar Welch what every business needs: a problem to solve. In this case, the issue was the significant delay government media teams were experiencing accessing news coverage through legacy media monitoring services, and the lack of sophistication in their tools.

“I saw firsthand that the news cycle was moving faster than decision makers could act,” Welch recalls.

“Existing services were built for the past and had no real, experienced comms professionals working in them – they didn’t understand the market.”

Enter Streem, the first comprehensive and realtime media monitoring service which now delivers to more than 400 organisations nationally, including dozens of departments and agencies at federal, state and local government levels.

With the ability to monitor and analyse Print, Online, TV, Radio, Podcasts and Social media in realtime, Streem provides live access to news content, tools to build reports and insights, distribute media and manage issues – all from a single platform.

From newcomer to market leader in five years

Publicly available AusTender data shows that having signed its first major government contract in December 2016, Streem has won more than 50% of new federal contracts put up for tender in 2020 and 2021, based on dollar value.

The company says that departments who go to market and run an open, competitive process for their media monitoring not only do better financially in the long run, but receive a much improved level of service, technology and access to content for their stakeholders and ministerial offices.

The data shows Streem’s federal government clients include the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Treasury, Finance, Home Affairs, the ATO and Department of Defence.

The company has also successfully renewed every major federal government department customer on new multi-year agreements.

Along the way, Welch says the team has learnt a lot about what it takes to service large complex departments.

“Delivering to government comes with additional responsibilities which we take very seriously. Streem offers 24/7, local Account Management and has mastered the process of transitioning customers into our service – making change a straightforward process.”

The advantage of calling Australia home

Streem has grown from the ground-up in Australia, built by a team experienced in corporate and government communications. Local staff spread around Australia, including in product development, have proved a major competitive advantage in servicing complex federal and state government departments.

“Not only is our 24/7 Account Management team based in Australia, but they are also sitting right alongside the engineers and product specialists, which is hugely beneficial when it comes to responding to the changing needs of clients,” Welch says.

Streem has also invested heavily in Australian content, signing a market-leading licensing agreement with the Copyright Agency in 2020 and in October becoming the exclusive rights-holder for Sky News Australia’s content including streams, transcripts and downloads.

Welch said the new agreement with Sky News Australia confirmed Streem as the leading comprehensive media monitoring service in Australia and underpinned the continuity of media access its customers enjoy.
