Promoting projects that are “climate smart” is at the top of Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) secretary Adam Fennessy’s agenda for 2024.

In this instalment of The Mandarin‘s annual Secretary’s Sticky Notes series, Fennessy offers some short and sharp responses to our five questions.

What was your 2023 highlight?
Commencing in my secretary role in September 2023.

What will be at the top of your agenda for 2024?
Supporting the culture and leadership of DAFF throughout what will be a busy and exciting year.

What is your department’s biggest issue … or opportunity?
Our biggest opportunity is in climate-smart agriculture, in partnership with the agriculture sector, regional and First Nations communities and the states and territories.

What do you expect will be your biggest leadership challenge?
Maintaining a strong focus on the financial sustainability of our organisation so we are well placed to deliver on our commitments and make an impact across Australia.

What advice do you have for those wanting a career in the APS?
The APS is a wonderful place to work for purpose-driven people. There is an incredible range of roles and opportunities across the APS. If you haven’t seen up close the positive impact you can have on people’s lives across Australia, come and work with us!
