The Most dangerous place on the planet
Journalists of the British newspaper The Daily Mail called the most dangerous place on the planet is lake Karachay.
More recently, only needed one hour spent on the shore to die.
Those wishing to purchase a property on the lake of course like the cost of houses on the shore of a picturesque lake in Russia, there is only a small problem: to live long, they won’t be able.
In 1990, the man who had been on shore about an hour, received a radiation dose of 600 roentgens, enough to kill a man.
The lake, located southwest of Chelyabinsk, has long been the repository of radioactive waste. Today the surface of lake Karachay largely covered by concrete, although the radiation level is still high.
From the history of the Karachay.
Chelyabinsk region is known as the most significant accumulation of radioactivity only in lake Karachay «hidden» two of Chernobyl. Since 1953 in the pond «supplies» deadly debris ON «lighthouse», which is located in the closed city Ozersk. …In 1949 in the Chelyabinsk region launched the country’s first industrial complex for obtaining plutonium was created production Association «lighthouse». Hard deadline of nuclear capacity in operation in the almost complete absence of systems of radiative and technological control resulted in 1949-1956 in the river Techa had dropped a huge amount of liquid radioactive waste.
In September 1957, «Lighthouse» explosion occurred, which formed a radioactive cloud which has covered the territory of three regions — the Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk and Tyumen. And since 1953, the waste began to drop in the small -area of 45 hectares — shallow and swampy lake Karachay. In the spring of 1967 during a drought, the shoreline of the pond dried up, and the wind for two weeks carried a radioactive elements…
At the present time the lake is gradually cleaned. However, the new radioactive vortex may occur again, and accumulated in the Karachay radioactive material contaminates groundwater.
The lake is so dangerous, that even stay on its banks in a few hours may lead to strong radiation.
– Probably, in these places you will meet nobody. Hardly even animals can live in such terrible conditions? — ask the workers «Lighthouse».
– Why? When we took water samples from wells at the Karachay, we often saw a horse with a foal. She lived there for a long time, more than a year. Nobody knows where it came from there. And then the horse, and the colt disappeared…
Strolling through the City, Sunny and green, and even you can’t imagine that somewhere nearby is a radioactive burial ground — the Karachay. Tens of thousands of people live and work in well protected area. Mill «lighthouse» — the only place in Russia where possible the storage and processing of spent nuclear fuel, and the rest «closed» Ozersk similar to an ordinary Russian city. Among the panel houses, which were built in the era of socialism, distinguished red-brick three-storey mansions «new Russians». In the city there is even a casino.
Earlier, when the secrecy the city was built, the matter never would have thought. The old-timers now recall that to be photographed in Ozersk was only in the apartment or in the woods, letters to family and friends left here without a return address and the envelopes the inhabitants of the city did not even try to seal — will still read what you have to.
On a hot July day on lake irtas that stretched almost the entire city, you can meet many tourists who sunbathe, swim, and catch fish. Some claim that water — pure, and no radioactive waste in it. Other waving (« — was») hand and say that from radiation to hide still nowhere and offer me to plunge into the water:
– Do not be afraid, there is no radiation — tell me — especially as the lake — historical. Here the Kurchatov boat riding. Swam without documents with the same Director «Lighthouse», and the protection of them and stopped. After many trials it was released, of course…
But I don’t particularly want to risk it.
Recently in Ozersk was a meeting of representatives of Minatom, EMERCOM, Gosatomnadzor, Russian Academy of Sciences, where it was agreed to cease the dumping of waste into lake Karachay and proceed to complete the filling of the lake.
Not sure if it happens as always: the decision was made, but in reality nothing will change? This is the question addressed to the Minister for atomic energy Yevgeny Adamov.
– Technological possibilities in order to stop the discharges of radioactive waste into lake Karachay, we have. I think it will take three to five years. It is very important to simulate various critical situations and their consequences. As for the funding for the project, then such money in the Federal budget, of course not. Let them earn their own…
…I Want to believe that Minatom adopted measures will eliminate overhanging the region in serious danger and our descendants will not inherit a «lake of death».
