New speakers announced for The Mandarin’s upcoming Sydney conference: ‘Rebuilding public service trust and integrity’

The Mandarin is delighted to launch its all-day in-person conference, to be held in Sydney on June 25, 2024.

‘Rebuilding public service trust and integrity Sydney’, sponsored by Salesforce, will bring leaders in the public sector together to discuss the issues they face and how to create a better future for the public service.

About the conference

After a decade of reporting and analysis for the public sector, The Mandarin has a unique understanding of the critical and sometimes undervalued role public servants play in this country.

Speakers

Our speaker line-up will include public sector and integrity leaders, who will bring their exclusive insights to this event.

New speakers announced:

  • NSW Ageing and Disability Commission deputy chair Joan Hughes  
    Joan has been a CEO in the not-for-profit sector for 30 years, with a focus on improving the recognition, status, policies and services for specific groups of people including older people and their family carers. Her current board roles include Ministerial Council on Ageing chair; NSW Ageing and Disability Commission deputy chair; and  Council on the Ageing (COTA) Australia board director.
  • NSW Department of Customer Service secretary Graeme Head
    Prior to his appointment as head of the NSW Customer Service, Graeme was inaugural NSW Public Service Commissioner. He also held senior executive positions at the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, Sydney Catchment Authority and what was previously named the NSW Department of Commerce.

The speaker line-up also includes:

  • Regina Featherstone is a senior lawyer for the Human Rights Law Centre’s whistleblower project — the first pro bono legal service in Australia dedicated to protecting whistleblowers. She completed the first social justice practitioner residency at the University of Sydney.
  • John Hatzistergos AM is chief commissioner of the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). He is a former district court judge, an adjunct professor of law at the University of Technology Sydney and has practised as a barrister. Between 2003 and 2011, Hatzistergos was a NSW government minister.
  • Kim McKay is the Australian Museum’s director and CEO. She co-founded the Clean Up Australia campaign, and she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2008 for distinguished service to the environment and the community.
  • Gisele Kapterian leads Salesforce’s Asia Pacific public sector strategy, assisting federal and state governments deliver public services. She leads Saleforce’s global thought leadership with BCG, researching the relationship between trust and government service delivery.
  • Mark Webb is chief executive of the NSW Department of Parliamentary Services, supporting the operation of the state parliament. He serves as a board member for the Parliamentary Professional Services Network.

Agenda

The conference presentations and panels will focus on practical advice for public servants and the firsthand experience of senior public service leaders and experts.

This panel will unpack how leaders need to deal with critical challenges and navigate complex issues while building a more effective, ethical, innovative and accountable public service.

  • Structural integrity

This will be a wide-ranging discussion on public service relationships – with business (through procurement), consultancies, and politicians and their staffers.

  • Making ethical government appointments

How the public service can prioritise transparency, accountability and integrity when appointing senior managers.
